Super Kewl Artists! (Marina Bychkova)

Sometimes I come across an artist I can’t believe took me so long to discover. A friend of mine sent me a link to this artist and I was blown away. I had a weird sense of deja vu when I first went to her site and realized she had been featured as a daily deviation on DA and was sitting comfortably in my favorites yet sadly forgotten.
Marina’s work with dolls emerged as an obsession when she was six years old. As a child she became aware and disappointed by the monotony and cliche appearance of mass-produced dolls. This realization and annoyance inspired her to create her own dolls representing her own ideas of feminine beauty. I can relate to her work for I too create the female figure in my opinion of what beauty should be in a woman. Her work in contradistinction to mine is very light and aerial which I find quite impressive and understandably tedious.
The thing that is so jaw dropping to me is her ability to create such weird audacious figures with realistic parts. The face on some of these dolls are so eerily realistic and the anatomical goodies plainly expressed in each doll’s figure is something to notice. The overall stance of the dolls comes off very Japanese anime-like. The exaggeration of the length of the legs, the massive eyes and the long arms are very reminiscent of how the Japanese convey their ideas of beauty in both men and women. In her gallery she explores different cultures in her female dolls and delves into the Afro race minimally. I would like to see more of that. I feel it’s not as successful as her Caucasian, Asian and Indian dolls are but could be looked into more and improved upon.
Overall I’m quite impressed with what I’m seeing. Very interested in what she has coming up in her work and wondering if she’ll go for life sized pieces for the heck of it!
